Solo Exhibition, 13.07.2024 - 05.01.2025

Museum Het Nieuwe Domein pays attention to the history and culture of the Sittard-Geleen-Born region. The mining history has played an important role in the development of this region and State mine Maurits, the largest coal mine in the Netherlands, has had a direct influence on the spatial planning of Sittard-Geleen. December 2024 will mark fifty years since the last coal was mined in our country, but the impact still lives on. This is a reason for museum Het Nieuwe Domein to pay attention to this with Mining Myths, a modest solo exhibition by artist Miriam Sentler.

The exhibition takes its title from a work by artist Miriam Sentler that was purchased by Het Nieuwe Domein in 2023. For her work and this exhibition, Sentler draws inspiration from her family history, which shows that her ancestors worked in mining in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). Her interdisciplinary work emphasizes the industrial transformation of landscapes in the modern era and Anthropocene. Sentler's work always starts from interactions with a specific landscape, in which she tries to highlight the changing relationships between people, matter, and animals. The focus lies hereby on the cultural and ecological legacy of the oil, gas, and coal industry.
